What is Earthquake Insurance?

Earthquake insurance is the type of insurance coverage that compensates the policyholder after an earthquake strikes and causes property damage. Earthquakes may inflict significant damage to residential structures. They can cause foundation damage and wall collapse; even little earthquakes can ruin furnishings and valuables.
Earthquakes will occur, however, we do not know when. We are aware that they can do significant harm to your property. You may even be forced to vacate your house while it is being restored or rebuilt. Natural calamities and in this case, an earthquake are not covered by homeowners, renters, or condominium insurance plans.

What is Earthquake Insurance Coverage?

Earthquake insurance might assist you in covering some of your losses. Earthquake coverage is available as an add-on to the policy and has a high deductible plan. A greater deductible spreads out the expense, allowing more individuals who need it to afford it.
  • Damage to your house, personal property, and (ALE) additional living expenses are the three basic components of earthquake coverage.
  • Earthquake insurance protects the loss or property damage and its valuables caused by earth tremors. If the earthquake causes a fire due to leakage from a broken gas main, only the resultant damage or loss from the fire is included under an Earthquake insurance policy. Homeowners that are not able to return home due to insurable losses may be entitled to supplementary living expenses in certain circumstances.
  • If an earthquake destroys your home's walls and ruins your TV and living room furniture. In addition, due to the earthquake, you must flee and stay in a hotel. The housing section of your coverage would cover wall cracks, the personal property piece would cover your TV and furnishings, and the ALE portion would pay your hotel stay. Depending on your coverage, you may need to file a different claim for each of them and may have to pay a separate deductible.

What Earthquake Insurance Does Not Cover?

Exclusions apply to all insurance plans. This is basically what the insurance does not cover. It is important to learn about your limitations by reading your policy. The following are typical limitations in earthquake insurance policies:

Fire

Earthquake insurance typically does not reimburse anything that is already covered by your homeowner's policy. For example, your homes insurance policy may cover fire damage even if the fire was caused by an earthquake. As a result, your earthquake insurance does not include fire damage.
Land
Typically, earthquake insurance excludes land damage such as sinkholes caused by erosion or other concealed openings beneath your land. You will have to purchase limited extra coverage in order to rehabilitate or stabilize the land.
What Does Wind and Hail Insurance Not Cover?
Loss that can be insured by other policies is not covered by wind hail insurance. For instance, automobile damage is not covered since comprehensive auto coverage should cover car damage.
It will also not cover floods caused by storm surges. This will need the purchase of a second flood insurance policy. The best approach to secure yourself, your house, and your belongings is to understand what each insurance will not cover and to acquire any additional coverage you require.

Do I Need Wind and Hail Only Insurance?

Windstorms and Hailstorms may cause significant damage to property and possessions. Wind damage is covered by standard house insurance up to the policy maximum, but if you live in a high-risk location, the policy limit may not be adequate. You may increase your wind and hail damage coverage limit with windstorm insurance for extra peace of mind.
